Bug#466991: Package: installation-reports
The biggest issue with CD/DVD burners is burn quality. This is something that can be improved with patched firmware provided one uses quality media and not trash like Laser or Princo. I would not user laser/princo/ritek which are all crap. Pay a bit more and never have a problem.

If you're just using the drive to play discs, and burn occasional data DVD's, then speed should not be an issue regardless of the software. Thanks, much, for the comprehensive answer. I'd like to burn an occasional data CD and possibly an occasional video (home-made, not theatrical release).

(Note: I save the 4450MB files to my HD then try to burn them to the DVD). The file is a backup file made with Ghost10. I know these files can be made up to 4482MB and be burned to a 4.7GB DVD because others can do it. For some reason I can't... not sure if it's the burning program or something else.

I would note to you that I cannot get consistent good cd burns over 16x (over 2.4x for dvds). I have not isolated the problem as being a hardware setting/limitation or a software setting/limitation. Now with your post, I guess I need to investigate if my burn problem is psu (hardware) related.
